-
- This document briefly describes the GNU optional product.
- GNU is free software that is developed maintained and
- supported by non-SGI parties. It is provided "as-is" with
- no support for the many interested customers who expressed
- interest in it.

- GNU is a large collection of UNIX free software utilities
- that are highly portable and have a wide installed base.
- These include standard UNIX utilities (like `find', `diff',
- etc.), text editors like `emacs', shells like `bash' and
- many more. In many cases, the GNU versions of standard Unix
- utilities are: faster, more stable, and have better support
- then their commercial versions counterparts (regardless of
- vendor).
-
- Due to popular demand, we are enclosing a subset of GNU
- utilities as an unsupported optional product with this IRIX
- release.
-
- Our main contribution is in making sure the tools build are
- packaged and run correctly (as far as we tested them) under
- IRIX. We have not done any changes or fixes to the original
- tools themselves.

- GNU subsystems are all optional. None of them gets installed
- by default. All the GNU subsystems install under /usr/gnu.
- You must add /usr/gnu/bin to your $PATH for convenience in
- invoking these packages. This is not done by default.
-
-
- All the GNU tools are provided with full source and
- distributed under the GNU Public License (GPL). Optional
- full source can be installed under /usr/gnu/src/. Source
- subsystems are called gnu.src.*

- The GNU and IRIX versions of certain commands are slightly
- incompatible This is caused by the fact that both GNU and
- IRIX sometime support non-standard extensions which may
- conflict with each other. If you encounter problems with
- this you may workaround them by reordering your $PATH.
-
-
- It is recommended that you read the file /usr/gnu/README
- after installation for a partial list of known
- incompatibilities.

- The GNU product is unsupported by SGI. Most GNU tools are
- maintained by kind volunteers and have a well publicized
- email address for reporting bugs. Please refer to the
- documentation that comes with the GNU tools for details.
